Control+D

Control D Method

Where Did It Start:

Control D has evolved from a decade of working with women who have diastasis recti. In my early training as a pilates instructor, there was no specific diastasis recti training. When my first client who had it started taking lessons with me, I did a little trial and error, but taught what made sense to me as a teacher. Her gap began to close and her friends began seeing me. Pretty soon, word got out that I was helping people close and that was the just the beginning of Control D.

I drew upon my background as a dancer, my knowledge as a pilates instructor and my Master’s in Dance Education from NYU where I explored and researched various somatic modalities such as Alexander, Feldenkrais, and Klein technique. A few years later, I studied at the Laban Institute for Movement Studies where I became a certified movement analyst (CMA). In 2011, I had my own experience birthing my son resulting in an emergency C-section, and was shocked at how scary and traumatic my experience was. While I did not have diastasis recti after my birth, many of my friends did and were receiving contradicting advice from their doctors, such as to do a lot of ab work and planks, or that having diastasis recti is normal and the only solution is surgery.

By this time in my career, I was teaching many more prenatal and postnatal clients, having lots of success helping women close their diastasis, and I wanted to learn more about the prenatal and postnatal world, so I trained to be a birth doula. This training helped me solidify my theories and why they were working and taught me so much about the pregnant body and why it is imperative to be cautious and gentle when training prenatal clients.

Shortly after my doula training, I had my second birth, a beautiful daughter, and had the complete opposite birth experience. I was in charge, empowered, and had a successful VBAC to a very large baby, even though I was a high-risk patient.

This program combines pilates concepts and principles, Bartenieff Fundmentals, Laban Movement Analysis, and inspiration from other prenatal and postnatal experts that I have trained with, such as Deb Goodman and Carolyn Anthony.

I wanted to create a method that strengthens and heals from within, that people can practice anywhere- even lying on the floor next to their babies crib at night. Control D is about connection within the body, centering, control, quality of movement, breath, and gaining awareness of how we function daily.

Every single body is capable of change. It doesn’t matter how wide the gap, or if you are starting 3 months, 3 years, or 30 years postpartum. The body can heal, and the body can change.
